Our Community Planners play an integral role in the day-to-day services we offer at the Chester County Planning Commission (CCPC), as well as our long-term projects and planning for the future of the region. We are excited to introduce lifelong Chester County resident, Joe Shanley, as our new Community Planner!

As a lifelong resident of Upper Uwchlan Township, Joe grew up surrounded by preciously valued natural spaces and found himself embracing the outdoors and environmentalism during his time at Penn State University. "As I explored sustainability there, I recognized how much potential ChesCo has to be a model of modern, intentional, holistic sustainability with all of the resources at our disposal," Joe said.

A strong belief in the importance of local government, an unyielding loyalty to Pennsylvania and Chester County, and a passion for environmentalism and community building led Joe to aspire to work with CCPC. "After a brief stint in the private sector working for a recycling logistics startup out of Pittsburgh, I am so excited to be a part of this team, helping to guide Chester County's path into the future," Joe added.

In addition, Joe is excited to help enable municipalities to pursue sustainability — addressing human needs while protecting and enhancing the natural environment. "With climate change posing such a huge threat to human civilization and supply networks, I believe that tangible progress towards reducing our society's ecological footprint and achieving social equity has to come from local action. Thinking locally reduces a monstrous challenge to realistic bite-size goals that every citizen can help achieve."

Joe's favorite place in Chester County is Marsh Creek State Park on the western (Lyndell) side, as he enjoys hiking the trails, kayaking, and viewing the abundance of fireflies in the summertime. He also enjoys music and is an avid concertgoer (COVID-19 permitting, of course). "I have been singing all my life and I enjoy pretending like I know how to play the piano," Joe added. He also likes running, video gaming, and traveling when time and money allow.

In his spare time, Joe can usually be found visiting friends in New York, Philly, or D.C., as well as reading or catching up on shows at home.

When asked what his favorite quote or life motto is, Joe replied with, "Fake it 'til you make it!"

We are excited to welcome Joe to the to the team!
